recently i got to do a really amazing project for a spiritual healer, katja. she has such amazing light, passion and energy but loves mostly black and white for decor. her huge garden provides most of her food, and flowers from this glorious backyard fill the house
ever the sexy archetype, she loves wolves, like i do. i recently helped her rethink her home and this blog is a kind of mood board for her aesthetic and vision….
our discussion began with the idea of spirit animals, and the bad reputation of wolves, and how there is a lot of manga style silliness out there, and paint by numbers looking nonsense pictures of wolves, and very little that really honors the fierce, wild and independent spirit of these animals.
but every once in a while you come across an artist whose depiction of the idea of wildness, of the spirit of the wolf is superbly powerful, sensitive and evocative, like that of the talented photographer katerina plotnikova, her portfolio is so beautiful it can be almost overwhelming, such a rich saturated gothic appeal.

My home is a beautiful open plan upstairs with sliding glass doors outdoors to a porch with a half arch window above, lots of light and sense of fluidity. It’s a dream home truly, built by husband, his friends, the FDNY & family, post Sandy.
In this space at one end there is a small sitting area, & at the other end, a playroom on the right, & my home office on the left. And therein lies the problem, too much overflow of plastic ponies & tiny farm animals.
Searching for a solution that provides a non permanent divider that won’t ruin the beautiful architectural & can be changed as our lives change. I wanted to share some of the interesting ideas I have found during my research for this problem! Enjoy!

Decorating with vintage prints, pretty calendars from years before, old appointment books –here are some DIY ideas to transform your child’s rooms or even your sitting room. Add depth, character & a sense of originality with eclectic selections.
Salon style hanging of reproductions, good quality laser prints, e-bay or thrift store finds, pages from old discarded kids’ books, and creative commons images licensed for non commercial use are some of the many sources for eclectic curation.
Your frames can be different materials and shapes as well for a true salon style arrangement.
For kids’ rooms, think about adding reverse glass paintings, framed old sewing patterns, hand drawn prints of old advertisements, and antique nursery decor items.
Combining children’s artwork, with historic art, folk art and modern pieces can work beautifully.
This painting rather makes me rethink on the dingy strange mid century style things I walked by at thrift stores….
These images below were sourced from google creative commons & licensed for non commercial reuse, so you can print them out & frame if you like…or you can hang with washi table or fancy pin tacks like this.

Stone & marble walls, painted grays, inky blues, maybe even plush neo-victorian blues, rich grays, fantastic blacks and deep plum so romantic….so gothique, so au courant…
Some rooms simply feature one saturated color in a furnishing, while other punctuate the deep color with rich brights. Many of the spaces are eclectic, mixing historic, antique with modernist items and features.
